Import Export Code, often known as IEC, is a special 10-digit code that is directly linked to the Pan Card of the person or business. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Government of India, issues the Import Export Code to businesses or individuals who are engaged in importing or exporting products or services from or to India. Each company or person who conducts import-export operations in India must have this license.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), which is part of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, is responsible for issuing the Import Export Code or License. The code serves as a reference for customs authorities and is valid for the duration of the entity’s or person’s existence. The code helps the government keep track of all import-export transactions and ensures compliance with laws and regulations.

It is essential for companies to have an Import Export License as it is required for customs clearance of goods and to take advantage of numerous schemes. Businesses in India cannot engage in import and export activities without the IEC code. As a result, businesses should apply for the IEC code as soon as possible to avoid delays or complications in their import and export activities. In the case of importing or exporting services or technology, the IEC is only required if the service or technology provider is receiving benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy or deals with specific services or technologies.

Please be informed that only one IEC code can be issued against a single PAN, and multiple IECs issued against the same PAN will be revoked automatically.

Here are some key features of the IEC:

  • check icon Mandatory Requirement: An IEC / Import Export Code is mandatory for any entity or individual that wishes to engage in import-export activities in India.
  • check icon Unique Identification: The IEC is a unique identification number that is used to identify businesses or individuals engaged in import-export activities. This number is used in all customs documents related to the import or export of goods or services.
  • check icon No Filing of Returns: There is no requirement to file any returns with the authorities after obtaining an IEC. However, the code must be quoted on all relevant customs documents.
  • check icon Lifetime Validity: Once an IEC is issued, it is valid for the entire lifetime of the entity or individual that holds it. There is no need to renew the code.
  • check icon IEC Update: The IEC holder has to update the Import Export Code every year before June end. If the IEC is not updated before June IEC will stand invalid.
  • check icon MEIS / SEIS: The Import Export license helps in availing benefits under various schemes like the MEIS and SEIS.
  • check icon No Restrictions on Import/Export: Having an IEC does not mean that the holder has automatic permission to import or export any item. The import/export of certain items may require additional permits or licenses.
