GST Registration is mandatory for enterprises with a turnover of Rs. 40 lakhs for products (₹20 lakh for special category states) and Rs. 20 lakhs for services (₹ 10 lakh for special category states).

The constitution defines “goods and services tax” as any tax on the supply of goods, or services or both except taxes on the supply of alcoholic liquor for human consumption. For tax collection, goods and services are separated into five tax slabs: 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%.

The components of GST are as follows:

  • check icon CGST: The Central Government collects CGST on intra-state sales (for example, transactions that occurs within Maharashtra).
  • check icon SGST: The state government collects SGST on intra-state sales (for example, a transaction that occurs within Maharashtra).
  • check icon IGST: It is a tax levied by the Central Government on inter-state sales (for example, from Maharashtra to Tamil Nadu).

When products or services are supplied within a state, this is referred to as intra-state transactions, and both the CGST and SGST are collected. When products or services are supplied between states, this is referred to as an inter-state transaction, and only IGST is collected.

Benefits of obtaining a GST Certificate of a GST Registration Number:

  • check icon Minimal compliance: The entire GST process (from registration to submitting returns) is online and is extremely simple. This has benefited start-ups in particular, as they no longer have to obtain multiple registrations such as VAT, excise, and service tax.
  • check icon Uniform Tax Rates: GST creates a common tax rate structure for most goods and services across the country, making it easier for businesses to comply with the tax system.
  • check icon Better Tax Administration: For tax collection and administration, the GST system relies on a strong IT infrastructure. This helps the government trace transactions and detect tax evasion.
  • check icon Digitalization: GST is a technology-driven tax system that encourages businesses to keep digital records and file returns online. This increases transparency and efficiency while decreasing the opportunity for tax avoidance.
  • check icon SME Growth: GST can help small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) grow by lowering compliance costs and fostering a level playing field. SMEs can also profit from the convenience of seeking input tax credits.
